The Lilongwe Institute of Orthopaedics and Neurosurgery (LION) in Malawi is a centre of excellence delivering life-changing surgical care in a challenging, resource-limited setting. As the country’s main referral centre for trauma, orthopaedics and neurosurgery, LION plays a vital role in restoring function and improving quality of life for thousands of patients every year.
A key part of LION’s ongoing success is its collaboration with visiting volunteer surgeons, including members of the British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH). These highly skilled clinicians give their time and expertise to support complex hand and upper limb surgery, provide training, and help build sustainable surgical capacity for the future.
JUNE Medical is proud to support this important work by donating HandMe® surgical retractors. Designed to improve access, visibility and control during delicate procedures, HandMe® has been supplied to assist volunteer surgeons and local teams in delivering safe, efficient care.
Mr Jonathan Jones, Hand Surgeon, said, “The HandMe retractor proved to be a highly flexible, reliable and easily applied sterile device to stabilise the hand for trauma surgery. Using the HandMe device for our complex severe hand injuries reduced surgical time, made surgery more safe and facilitated microsurgical repair. The flexible skin hooks are a game changer!”
