June Medical honoured with prestigious Queen’s Award

Queen's Award

Galaxy II earns a Queen’s Award for Enterprise for Innovation

We are revelling in the news that June Medical is one of 48 organisations presented with this year’s Queen’s Award for Enterprise for Innovation. This success has been years in the making, and the award will be celebrated with every staff member at June Medical, every surgeon who helped fine tune the Galaxy II retractor, and every partner who helped get this device into operating theatres around the world.

To see the impact and potential of the Galaxy II is something that makes us so proud. Proud to see how this product helps surgeons and the patients they treat, and proud that this Swedish designed and British made device can potentially save the healthcare millions in direct cost annually!

But this award isn’t about our pride. It’s about the doctors and nurses who use the Galaxy II, and the patients they help. June Medical exists for them.

Watching the clumsy, outdated surgical retractors in use, we realised the need for an improvement. That’s when the idea for the Galaxy II was born. Now, this single-use, self-retaining surgical retractor is used in a variety of procedures in operating theatres in the UK and beyond – assisting healthcare professionals, reducing the risk of patient-to-patient cross-contamination and eliminating the risk of losing any part of the retractor during surgery.

The Queen’s Award for Enterprise for Innovation is the most prestigious business award in the country!

This honour is a huge moment for June Medical, and one that will impact our business model for years to come. It will not only help get the Galaxy II into more operating theatres around the world, but provide even more motivation and inspiration to develop the next game-changing surgical device. And, hopefully, it’ll even encourage other companies to follow suit and develop cost-effective medical devices that are safer and easier to use.

Galaxy II® is a self retaining ring retractor that improves safety in surgery.

A modern take on an old idea

Inspired by old retractors with screw mechanisms, Swedish born innovator Angela Spang has produced an improved, light weight retractor with a safer design.
