NOW LAUNCHING: The HandMe® Retractor: a 3-in-1 tool revolutionizing hand surgery instruments!

Learn more about this innovative new surgical product from June Medical!

The HandMe Retractor for hand surgery such as Dupuytren’s is a new invention specifically designed for improving access and vision for hand surgeons, whilst reducing the clutter and cost of multiple instruments. With its patent pending design, it creates a clean surgical field by covering the fingers and elevating the relevant digits, allowing unprecedented control for the surgeon.

With specially designed digit holders, gentle but very reliable retraction provides both stability and access to the exposed tissue.

The HandMe Retractor replaces the lead hand, the retractor AND the sutures / assistant currently often used in hand surgery: a 3-in-1 solution!

Reducing Hand Surgery Complications with HandMe Retractor

To hold the hand open for surgery, a lead hand or base plate is often used to stretch the hand and keep the palm and fingers open. Once the incision is made, a retractor is placed into the incision to keep the tissue apart for the surgeon to access. After this, an assistant or sutures hold back the tissue flaps so they don’t get in the way of the operation whilst the surgeon addresses the underlying issue.

The current solution uses several devices to accomplish access, vision and control of the surgical site.

It is resource heavy, both in managing the instruments before, during and after surgery, as well as leads to a cluttered and busy surgical site for the operating surgeon, whilst working in the very small surgical field in the anatomy of the hand. The hand is an intricate part of the body, and expertise and precision is paramount. De-cluttering simplifies and improves ergonomics AND improves access, as well as reducing costs.

Feedback from hand surgeon in the UK: “Normally it is a struggle to get retractors to stay in, so this is great.”

Innovations in Reconstructive Hand Surgery:
The HandMe Advantage

The HandMe Retractor is made of a strong and resilient material that can be recycled (but not resterilised). The hand surgery retractor has slots to secure small, low profile hooks to hold tissue back, and finger-hat accessories to secure the digits in place as surgery progresses.  High tension hooks are placed into the skin/ligaments/tendons and secured around the frame base, whilst a slightly raised platform allows selected digits to rest comfortably and secure.

The hooks are low profile, 3mm sharp hooks designed to hold tissue without causing unnecessary trauma. The finger-hats are especially designed to secure selected digits onto the raised platform and are shaped to not limit blood flow. They are slightly rugged to prevent slipping, even with fluid present.

  • Precision retraction for single or double digits
  • Reduced tissue trauma
  • Enhanced visibility and access for surgeons

How to use HandMe Retractor

The HandMe Retractor is an innovative 3-in-1 surgical tool for hand surgeries like Dupuytren’s, enhancing access, visibility, and control while reducing instrument clutter. It replaces the need for traditional tools such as the lead hand, retractors, and sutures.

01

Open the sterile product

Into the sterile field.

02

Place the retractor

frame plate: One or two digits above the plate as required, the rest of digits can stay underneath to improve vision and access. (If desired, all digits can sit on top of the frame plate and be held back by the tie.)

03

Secure digit(s) with anti-slip FingerHats

by placing the FingerHat on top of the digit and securing the straps in (any) slots on the frame to position the hand as desired. Long tie string can be cut to size to secure additional digits, or used as is (if needed). For very strong contraction in the digit(s), double-wrap the strap in two slots for extra traction and secure hold.

04

Fasten the Hooks

3mm Sharp stainless steel, low-profile hooks are placed into the tissue and secured in any slot on the frame plate. These can be repositioned at any time by removing the hook from the tissue and reposition it in any slot. Hooks are used both to hold skin open or to position or secure tendons, ligaments or muscle.

05

(If needed) Silicone Ties

Versatile, adjustable length. Can be used in a wide variety of ways.

06

Retracting tissue:

As surgery progresses, hooks can be repositioned as needed.

07

After surgery

skin hooks are discarded, and HandMe frame plate and ties can be recycled (NOT resterilised) where facilities exist.

Cost Savings In Hand Surgery

HandMe Hand Retractor with single digit raised for a range of hand surgery procedures (like Dupuytren's)

Calculations based on current use as defined by surgeons in the NHS (National Health Service, United Kingdom) lists cost as follows:

  • Lead hand purchase, storage, cleaning and sterilisation: £40 / surgery
  • Retractor (gelpie or similar) purchase, storage, cleaning and sterilisation: £25 / surgery
  • Sutures used to hold back tissue: £10-48/ surgery
  • Assistant 30 min: £100

£175-213 per surgery (handling cost of reusable instruments is not included, but add significant time and cost.)

Using HandMe instead will half the cost per surgery.

Reduced Environmental Impact with HandMe Retractor

HandMe is designed with the environment in mind, and can be recycled!

Using modern manufacturing materials and processes, HandMe is created using engineering that allow for minimal material with maximum stability. Not needing washing and resterilising, using environmentally damaging resources, HandMe can be recycled to suitable facilities.  In the UK, all surgical waste is incinerated, and the output from the process of burning is immeasurable amount of CO2 and a small amount of soot.

HandMe Optimise Surgical Planning

Using HandMe will optimise surgical planning — no more waiting for instruments to be cleaned!

When time between surgeries is time wasted/costing money, turnover times are increasingly important. Using HandMe to replace the use of lead hand/gelpie/assistant etc saves not only on preparation time, but also reduces the need to coordinate with sterilisation and transport. The compact kits contain everything needed: the frame, the hooks, the finger hats and the ties, all efficiently packed in one sterile kit, ready for use whenever needed.

About Hand Surgery

Your hands and wrists are essential tools that allow you to work, play and perform everyday activities.  How well the hand and wrist interact depends on the integrity and function of the ligaments, tendons, muscles, joints and bones. Problems in any of these can affect upper extremity function, causing disruptions at home and work and negatively impacting quality of life.

The human hand itself is very complex and delicate in structure. Hand surgery requires a completely different surgical approach from a qualified hand and wrist surgeon whether treating fractures, arthritis or deformities. Hand surgery traditionally includes treatment of the entire hand, wrist and forearm.  Again, this whole region works as a single unit, and the dysfunction of a single part needs consideration of the whole.

Problems of the hand and wrist include carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, tendonitis, arthritis, fractures, nerve compression, peripheral nerve damage, brachial plexus injuries, thoracic outlet syndrome, athletic injuries, trauma, and elective surgeries, among other conditions.

Tips for Healthy Hands and Wrists

People use their hands and wrists for the bulk of their activities during the day; mostly, without ever stopping to think about it. But sufferers of arthritis trigger finger, carpal tunnel syndrome, or other ailments that can affect the hand and wrist, realize just how important they are to everyday tasks.

The wrist and hand are one of the most intricate yet vulnerable areas to injure in the body. But by taking the time to understand a few basic preventative procedures, people will be able to keep the wrist and hand in good shape and avoid having to see an orthopedic hand specialist or hand and wrist surgeon altogether.
