Following the devastating impact of Hurricane Melissa, communities across Jamaica are facing significant challenges, with widespread damage and urgent humanitarian needs.
Hurricane Melissa made landfall in western Jamaica (near New Hope, Westmoreland parish) as a Category 5 storm with sustained winds around 185 mph (295 km/h) The storm brought extreme rainfall, leading to severe flooding and landslides. Several hospitals and public buildings suffered damage; debris, landslides, and fallen trees blocked many roads and collapsed utility poles. A large portion of the Island has also lost power, with communications severely disrupted.
Direct Relief is actively coordinating emergency shipments of medical supplies and essential aid to support local health facilities and response teams. Their swift action is helping ensure that vital care reaches those most affected.
